Danny van Poppel (Trek Factory Racing) won the opening prologue of the Tour of Luxembourg. After finishing 2nd last year in the prologue, the young Dutchman went one better this year and set a time that was 4 seconds faster than Jean-Pierre Drucker (Wanty Groupe Gobert) and a further second faster than Alex Kirsch (Leopard Development).
With the pouring rain making the course very slippery, many riders did not want to take too many risks and hinder their chance of a good overall result. Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung had Ignatas Konovalovas finish in 25th place, 23″ down on van Poppel as the teams highest placed rider. All the other Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung riders finished within 11 seconds of Konovalovas, putting the team in good position to challenge for a top finish in the coming days.
