Jay comes from a close family and can often be spotted in Johannesburg during the off season riding with his dad and brother who are also cyclists. After spending two years on Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung, Jay opted to gain experience on the US circuit and raced for Fly V, Bissell and then UnitedHealthcare.
After a heavy crash a few weeks before the 2012 Tour of Portugal, Jay went on a 200km break during stage 1 and held on to win the stage in emphatic fashion. Jay achieved a lifelong dream of becoming the South African National Road Champion in 2013 and in 2014 he set up teammate, Louis Meintjes to win the title and finished in 3rd place himself. Jay was also part of the 2014 Vuelta a Espana team.
