Gerald was born in Cologne and grew up with his parents and an older brother. He loves traveling to exotic places during the off season and describes spontaneous holidays as his best experiences. He still lives in Cologne and thinks it’s one of the best cities in the world.
He was attracted to cycling through the attention that the T-Mobile team brought the sport in Germany. He quickly discovered his talent on the bike and became the youngest German road champion at 18 years old. His best moment on the bike was winning the under 23 world championships the following year.
Gerald joined Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b at the end of 2012 and was given the responsibility of being the teams protected leader in the big races. He relished it and took five victories in his debut season with the team, the biggest being the Milan Sanremo Classic. 2014 only yielded 1 victory for the German but numerous top 10 placings. Gerald is raring to go in 2015, particularly with the Tour de France as part of the team plans.
