Biography
Andreas comes from a family of cyclists, as both his parents were bike racers. His mother owns a bicycle shop in Cologne and he describes his family as “cycling crazy”. Andreas says if he were not a professional cyclist, he would be writing children’s books. He nearly stopped cycling at the end of 2011 when he found himself without a contract after leaving the Quick Step cycling team.
Andreas joined Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung in 2013 to be compatriot Gerald Ciolek’s leadout man in the sprints. The two riders are best friends and the partnership has proved a very successful one. Andy also uses his experience to mentor some of the younger riders on the team. The day before the 2013 UCI World Road Race Championships under 23 races, he called Louis Meintjes and offered him encouragement for the race and shared his knowledge of the field. Meintjes eventually won the silver medal. When not cycling, Andreas enjoys the beach as well as skiing and hiking.
